Regensburg

The way to work is a stroll through history, time after time.

Over the historical Stone Bridge, over 800 years old, to St. Peter's Cathedral, the chief gothic cathedral masterpiece in Bavaria.

Through meticulously renovated medieval courtyards, past patrician castles, whose metre-thick walls have withstood centuries and speak for the city's ideal location.

Not only Goethe recognised: "Regensburg is situated very well." Yesterday, the old salt roads led through the gates of the city; today, new roads to the East have opened…

One can enjoy the small, gourmet eatery in the tower of a proud trading house, "study" the land and its people from underneath mighty chestnut trees, hear jazz or classical music in ancient stone rooms.

Rock bands, choruses, orchestras and, of course, traditional folk groups, take turns performing here. And when they are not on tour in Japan or the USA, even the Domspatzen Boys' Choir performs in its hometown.

The city and hinterland have a certain flair and appear unusually unbroken

Several hundred thousand guests stay in the city every year, and around 1.5 million day visitors discover Bavarian inn culture, hidden restaurants, cafés ranging from the emperor's lodgings to the princely palace of Thurn und Taxis, fashionable pubs behind facades that are protected by monument laws, discothèques, and cellars with small performance stages.

Anyone who still describes this area as "provincial" can only mean it in the positive sense: a hometown feeling, intact social structures, diverse and healthy countryside, manageable spaces, short distances…
